Why Do Medical Careers Pay So Well

There’s really no prolific answer to this question. Why do medical careers pay so well? Everyone has their own opinion as to what the answer is, but the one most often given is usually something like this. Medical careers cost a lot of money, and there is a much longer time investment in order to complete the schooling required, to become a medical professional. So it makes sense that the salaries of professionals in this career field would be higher that of other careers. At least that’s how many people see it. This may be true, but that’s not the only reason.

Societies all over the world tends to place a larger value on those careers that are necessary for the survival of the population. The medical field is one of them; and not just the modern medical field.

Tribal cultures that have existed for hundreds and thousands of years have always held their medicine men and healers in higher esteem than others within their communities. Those individuals who possess the ability to heal have, and always will, be credited with being an integral part of why their tribes have survived. It is the same today.

Without nurses and doctors or phlebotomists and imaging technicians the health of this nation would slip rapidly, and that would be devastating to our society. The same can be said of those career paths that uphold justice and protect citizens from harm. Because these positions are so vital to the very being of our society they are held in higher regard than many other positions. Therefore, society is usually willing to pay a higher price to those that choose these career paths. This is even more evident when you take a look at the salaries of the many different positions within the medical community itself.

Some surgeons make more that other surgeons. Almost all surgeons make more money that specialist. Physicians make more than physician assistants, and the list goes on and on. Even different positions within common career path differ according to the abilities with which the person is able to provide care and services.

A registered nurse will make more money than a licensed practical nurse does because they can do more. Because they are more versatile, the value of their position is considered to be higher. Thus the salary is higher. This is also the case with other similar medical positions.

The healthcare industry is certainly a great, and commendable, career path to choose. People will always get sick or need some sort of medical care which means these positions will always be in demand. Which career path you choose will determine what your earning potential is. The more skill and training it takes to do your job will almost always mean a higher salary.

Do yourself a favor, and don’t choose a medical career just because you can make more money. The medical field can be extremely demanding on those that choose it.
