Special Education Success Story with ADD and ADHD

Issue
In our culture is moving quickly, special education students diagnosed with ADD or ADHD (attention deficit and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are increasingly growing problem for teachers. After training in one degree or another for almost 40 years and was very active child’s parents, I studied these conditions with immediate personal interest.

Keep your attention?
At the beginning of my work with attentionally question, I found that if the learning activity was quite attractive, many of them students can hold the attention for a long time. Special education students diagnosed with ADD or ADHD often have the opportunity to attend for long periods of work with computers or video games. I wondered whether the problem lies more in the pace of training activities.

Give them what they need
Later I began to offer activities in my class that some of the same qualities of the immediate response made headlines in computerized attention. One of the most successful of these was the excavation of stone.

Setting
Fossil excavation was 6 weeks of class – more clubs, really – in which students were digging a fish fossil rock matrix “Real Soft”. At this time the class consisted of many special education students with various problems in education, in particular ADHD. The result class was excellent.

The interest and attention
Let’s start with some guessing game involving fossils hidden in velvet bags and quickly moved in the excavation of some stone. Within minutes, my job was done, the students worked independently for the other classes of two hours. My job is harder than the day was to provide clean, students just do not want to stop working.

Tools and Accessories
Only tools required for this activity were small screwdriver type, which are available in any hardware store for a set of measures to improve the glass eye tool. They also provide various types of magnifiers. Most appreciated is the opening of the microscope, which gave the man with the best view of the fragile resources. However, much can be accomplished easily with the naked eye or a magnifying glass on a pedestal, only to leave hands free.

And then there are problems in the behavior
I presented a new challenge midway in the second class, disruptive behavior of students who were removed from another class. I did what I could to present our work and bring up to speed. His first job was a little more than digging a hole through the rocks, paying little attention to fossils it contains.

Success!
Then something strange happened. Another boy, a special challenge for student education in general, little academic success, he began to teach. You see, this boy was fascinated with the fossil dig, and takes an incredible success. He simply took over what was done my work.

Students are enthusiastic about
Final approval came at the end of our 6-week class. Throughout the period, rarely closed down, but was shown to couple videos to give students some additional details about the excavation and preservation of fossils, geological history and so on. In the last class, I ask the students oral assessment class. When I asked how he could improve the class, they all agree: Watch the video, only if we can continue our excavations petrified at the same!

It is a real success. In this project, six weeks of middle school children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and receiving special education services have been as successful, if not more, than other students.

Even more attractive instrument, the TV was not high on the list of students with significant work. As a teacher, I felt that I got a great gift to learn how to maintain these special students. I advise you to try!
